Shimano Recall Crankset Inspection
Shimano is voluntarily recalling certain bonded 11-speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets manufactured prior to July 2019 due to a potential bonding separation issue.
What to expect if my crank fails inspection?
Cranksets that show signs of bonding separation or delamination during inspection will receive a free replacement crankset from Shimano. The replacement will be installed by our mechanics. If your crankset needs replacement following the inspection, do not use it. In the event that a replacement crankset is not immediately available, Shimano will notify you through our shop when it becomes ready.
Shimano will make every effort to expedite the replacement crankset. However, due to the wide range of chainring sizes and crankarm lengths, it is possible that your specific crankset may not be in stock. If a replacement is temporarily unavailable, Shimano will collaborate with us to maintain communication and provide confirmation once the replacement becomes available. Please be aware that this aspect is beyond the control of D'Ornellas Bike Shop and rests solely with Shimano.
Has your bike been affected by the Shimano crankset recall?
Shimano will arrange for D'Ornellas Bike Shop to inspect applicable cranks manufactured before July 2019 and replace any cranks that fail the inspection process. No further action is required for cranks that pass the inspection. The voluntary Corrective Action Plan proposed by Shimano has been reviewed and approved by the CPSC. This plan aims to provide consumers with multiple methods to identify potential bonding separation issues in their cranks and promptly eliminate any possible safety risks.
We highly recommend bringing in your bike for inspection to us at D'Ornellas Bike Shop. The inspection process usually takes around 1-2 days. Calling in advance and making arrangements with the store will help minimize the timeline you'd be away from your bike in our peak season.
The affected model numbers include:
ULTEGRA FC-6800, FC-R8000, and DURA-ACE FC-9000, FC-R9100, FC-R9100-P. These model numbers can be found stamped on the inside of the crank arm near the bottom.
Not all Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranks need inspection. Only cranks produced before July 2019 should be inspected, and you can determine if your crank requires inspection by identifying the model number. Reading Shimano's recall notice will help you further determine if your crankset is affected.
